Charles Lee Fairleigh, age 85, passed away Friday, January 31, 2020 at the Medical Center in Enterprise, Alabama. He was born March 13, 1934 to Perrin Lee and Caroline Mayer Fairleigh in Kansas. In October of 1964, after completing high school and college he began his military career by joining the United States Air Force. He served four years, followed by the Air Force Reserves. During his time as an active duty reserve, he began a 22-year career in Civil Service, retiring in 1989.
Retiring allowed Charles to pursue his passion, golf. For many years he enjoyed playing at the Enterprise Country Club with the Senior Golf Group. Some of his accomplishments were: making nine hole-in-ones; winning numerous Senior championships; and winning the Golf Magazine’s Father Son Team Classic in 2001. Chuck was enjoying his retirement years when he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2016. Due to health reasons he retired his golf clubs in 2018.
Charles was a great husband; father; grandfather; and great-grandfather. He had a full happy life and will be missed by all.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Perrin Lee and Caroline Mayer Fairleigh; two brothers, Stephen Lee Fairleigh and Robert Lee Fairleigh.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Fern Morgan Fairleigh; daughter, Diana Mara (Hawaii); son, Darrell Fairleigh and wife Frances (Iowa); five granddaughters, Stevie Mara, Billie Mara, Jackie Mara, Kailee Takayama, and Chelsea Fairleigh-Jones; one grandson, Mason Fairleigh; six great-granddaughters, Jianni, Lilyanni, Adalee, Bradie, Keara-Leigh and Cali-Ava; three great-grandsons, Louie, Jayden, Jessen, and one more on the way; and special fur friend Babee.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 8, 2020 beginning at 1:30 p.m. at St. Luke United Methodist Church, 201 Heath Street Enterprise, Alabama 36330. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Church Building Fund.
